Teacher Educators as Critical Storytellers: Effective Teachers as Windows and Mirrors

Breaking away from the historically dominant narrative that White females make the best teachers, this book contends that effective teachers can be both “windows” and “mirrors” for students. Teachers should reflect the student population in racial and cultural terms while also serving as windows for students to see opportunities that lie outside of their immediate circumstances. Employing a critical storytelling framework, respected scholars share the teaching practices of influential teachers that they learned from. Chapter authors are diverse teacher educators from the fields of education, educational psychology, administration, policy, and curriculum and instruction. Each storyteller identifies key concepts and principles that explain why the selected teacher was so memorably effective. This inspirational volume provides a series of templates that help pinpoint the attitudes and behaviors of those teachers who make a positive difference in the lives of their students.

Nicholas D. Hartlep

Nicholas D. Hartlep (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee) is the Robert Charles Billings Endowed Chair in Education at Berea College where he Chairs the Department of Education Studies. Before coming to Berea College Dr. Hartlep Chaired the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education at Metropolitan State University, an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) in St. Paul, Minnesota. While there he also served as the Graduate Program Coordinator. Dr. Hartlep has published 22 books, the most recent being Racial Battle Fatigue in Faculty: Perspectives and Lessons from Higher Education which was published by the Routledge. His book The Neoliberal Agenda and the Student Debt Crisis in U.S. Higher Education, with Lucille L. T. Eckrich and Brandon O. Hensley (2017) was named an Outstanding Book by the Society of Professors of Education. In 2020, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education named him an Emerging Scholar. In 2018, the Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) granted Dr. Hartlep the John Saltmarsh Award for Emerging Leaders in Civic Engagement Award. In 2017, Metropolitan State University presented him with both the 2017 Community Engaged Scholarship Award and the President’s Circle of Engagement Award. In 2016, the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee presented him with a Graduate of the Last Decade Award for his prolific writing. In 2015, he received the University Research Initiative Award from Illinois State University and a Distinguished Young Alumni Award from Winona State University.
