M. Dean Wright to Participate in the Kentucky Book Festival with “Welcome, Caller”

M. Dean Wright to Participate in the Kentucky Book Festival with “Welcome, Caller”

August 24, 2023

What will Kentucky Book Festival visitors find on your table?

On my table visitors will find my debut novel, Welcome, Caller, which follows a sarcastic trans bartender
named Malcolm and his ragtag group of friends. Malcolm forms a crush on an anonymous radio show
host—unaware that this host may or may not be the very same man that he despises in real life. This
novel is a romantic comedy that explores the intricacies of queer neurodivergent love in all its forms, and
how navigating these experiences can impact life, relationships, and the road to self-acceptance.

Whom do you invite to stop by? Who will benefit from reading your book?

Readers who seek a book with a more accurate and detailed representation of the queer and
neurodivergent experience would greatly appreciate Welcome, Caller. If you’re a part of these
communities and you’ve been searching for a story with which you can truly connect and sympathize,
this book is for you. If you’re someone outside of these communities just hoping to learn more about the
queer and/or neurodivergent experience, this book is for you. Even if you’re just looking for a light
rom-com with diverse characters to tug at your heartstrings and leave you satisfied by the end, this book
is for you!

Could you please tell us something curious about you and/or your book?

I used to go by the name “Mal,” after the main character in Firefly, Malcolm Reynolds. My partner (and
future fiance) is named Peter. It just so happens that Malcolm and Peter are the romantic leads of
Welcome, Caller. I wrote this book long before my partner and I were romantically together, and long
before my partner even went by the name Peter. Fancy that!

Is this your first time participating in Kentucky Book Festival? If yes – what are you looking forward to
the most? If you’ve participated before – what was your favorite experience at the Festival?

This is my first time participating. I greatly look forward to meeting with readers and other authors, and
to taking memorable pictures at my first ever official book signing.
