Greta’s Gumbo

What will Kentucky Book Festival visitors find on your table?

Kentucky Book Festival visitors will find on my table:

Samples of my books:

Greta’s Gumbo:

  • As her frazzled dad shops for gumbo ingredients, he doesn’t notice when Greta, determined to calm her fussy baby brother, summons the help of a hyperactive monkey, a curious rabbit, and a frozen penguin. The baby laughs. But when a grunting elephant and a lumbering bear cause chaos, the baby wails.  Yikes! Can Greta calm the baby and help Dad get groceries for Greta’s gumbo? Imagination rules in this fun story for young readers.

When I Was an Alligator:

  • Follow a curious Cajun kid as she mysteriously transforms into a series of wetlands creatures, including a tree frog, a heron, a catfish, and even a mosquito! Discover along with her as each one reveals something of its habits and habitat. With fun language, page-turning onomatopoeia, and charming art, When I Was an Alligator is a playful and informative exploration of our treasured coastal wetlands.

When I Was a Pelican:

  • In this latest adventure, the curious Cajun kid mysteriously transforms into a series of Gulf Coast creatures, including a shark, a dolphin, a crab, and even a jellyfish! Along the way, each animal reveals something of its habits and habitat. With fun language, charming art, and page-turning onomatopoeia, When I Was a Pelican is a playful and informative exploration of our beloved coastal waters.

Giveaways from Louisiana:

  • Mardi Gras beads
  • Jumping frog toys
  • Bookmarks
  • A “raffle” for an alligator Warmie.

Whom do you invite to stop by? Who will benefit from reading your book?

Families who want to develop imagination, curiosity, and care for the environment will enjoy my books. Teachers and librarians can use my books for lessons in ecology, language, or creativity. If you are interested in children’s literature or Louisiana culture, please stop by.

Could you please tell us something curious about you and/or your book?

What’s curious about me:

I have worked in elementary education for 25 years, primarily designing and implementing enrichment curricula for gifted children. When I’m not writing, hosting gatherings for family and friends, or playing with my grandchildren, you might find me riding a lime green tricycle!

What’s curious about my books:

  • When I Was an Alligator represented Louisiana at the 2022 National Book Festival. When I Was an Alligator and When I Was a Pelican feature a curious Cajun kid as the main character.
  • Greta’s Gumbo features a dad in charge of Greta, her baby brother, the cooking, and the grocery shopping. It’s a fun book for Dad’s to read to their little ones.

Is this your first time participating in Kentucky Book Festival? If yes – what are you looking forward to the most?

Coming from Louisiana, I am thrilled to meet readers and writers from Kentucky and learn from them. I’m looking forward to bringing a little Louisiana culture to Kentucky and bringing back a little Kentucky culture to Louisiana.
