About the Author

A recipient of the Chaffin Award for contributions to Appalachian Literature, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Breadloaf and Sewanee Writers’ Conferences, and twice from the Fulbright Foundation to Slovakia and Romania, Mark Powell directs the creative writing program at Appalachian State University. In The Late Rebellion, the residents of Germantown, a small South Carolina community that nestles in the folds of the Appalachian Mountains, challenge traditional notions of what it means to be Southern, and what it means to be accepted, particularly when the old ways begin to crumble.
