David Blight, who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his most recent book, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, will discuss Douglass’ personal and political life as well as his long and continued significance and impact on the history of the United States. Amy Murrell Taylor, a historian of the American South whose work focuses on the era of the Civil War, Emancipation, and Reconstruction, is the author of (most recently), Embattled Freedom: Journeys through the Civil War’s Slave Refugee Camps. Amy Murrell Taylor is a historian of the American South whose work focuses on the era of the Civil War, Emancipation, and Reconstruction. A native of Rockville, Maryland, Taylor received an AB in History from Duke University and an MA and PhD from the University of Virginia. She currently teaches history at the University of Kentucky, where she is a professor of history and was honored with a “Great Teacher” Award from the UK Alumni Association in 2016. She previously taught for eleven years at the University at Albany, State University of New York. In addition to Embattled Freedom, Taylor is the author of The Divided Family in Civil War America (UNC Press, 2005), and co-editor, with Michael Perman, of Major Problems in the Civil War and Reconstruction (Cengage, 2010).
