Shitbag Soldier

What will Kentucky Book Festival visitors find on your table?

Visitors will find signed copies of my book about my experience as a young, enlisted soldier stationed in Germany with the Army during the pre-9/11 era titled Shitbag Soldier: A Creative Nonfiction Novel.

Whom do you invite to stop by? Who will benefit from reading your book?

I invite everyone to stop by and say hello. Almost everyone is or knows someone who has served in the military. My book has proven most popular among women, both veterans and non-veterans, but it isn’t just about a woman in the military. It is the universal story of a young person leaving home and going out into the world for the first time.

Could you please tell us something curious about you and/or your book?

The stories told my soldiers always fascinated me. Often, these tales differed from the war stories depicted in books, movies, and TV. Soldiers spoke about the comradery and adventures they experienced while serving. When I was a twenty-one-year-old soldier in the Army, I promised myself that someday I would not only tell my own story, I would write it.

Is this your first time participating in the Kentucky Book Festival? If yes—what are you looking forward to the most? If you’ve participated before—what was your favorite experience at the Festival?

The 2024 Kentucky Book Festival will be my first time taking part in the event. After being a patron and volunteer over the last several years, I am excited to be on the other side of the table, selling copies of my book.

About the Author

Raised in Knox County, Lubrina Burton left home as a teenager to serve in Germany with the United States Army and returned home to Kentucky at twenty-one with many experiences as a young, enlisted soldier in a pre-9/11 military to inspire much of her work. Her first book, Shitbag Soldier, examines the military fairytale that fueled Burton’s enlistment in light of the camouflage nightmares of a reality where she must survive by writing her own narrative instead of letting someone else define her truth.
